CMU is Mindanao’s Lone Finalist at the National DOST-PTRI Stitch-Off

Central Mindanao University (CMU) proudly represented the entire island of Mindanao as the sole finalist in the Department of Science and Technology–Philippine Textile Research Institute’s (DOST-PTRI) 3rd Stitch-Off: Filipiniana-Coded Contest held on October 22, 2025, at Foro de Intramuros, Manila.

Students from the Department of Home Economics Education and Family Life, College of Human Ecology (CHE), secured a prestigious spot among the Top 15 Finalists from a pool of more than 50 competing institutions nationwide.

Design that Speaks of Identity

CMU’s entry, titled “Hulagway sa Tribu” (Image of the Tribe), drew inspiration from the everyday symbols, stories, and values of Bukidnon’s indigenous peoples.

The collection, designed by Daisy Marie S. Barrientos, Ricalyn F. Presbitero, and Lean Art B. Madjos, under the mentorship of Mr. Redgie M. Castro and Ms. Marilou P. Butanas, translated Bukidnon’s cultural heritage into visual form—using textures, weaves, and color as language.

Each element carried meaning:

  • Geometric patterns resembled Bukidnon’s mountain landscapes.

  • The color palette—a balance of red, black, white, and yellow—reflected values of bravery, purity, and abundance.

  • Amakan-inspired details symbolized interconnectedness within and among tribes.

Their design did not merely reference tradition; it reinterpreted it, showcasing how local identity can thrive within modern silhouettes.

Collaborating with Local Weavers

To bring their vision to life, the CMU team partnered with the Miag-ao Weavers Association of Iloilo, integrating handwoven hablon-simray fabrics into their garments.

The collaboration, facilitated by DOST-PTRI, allowed students to experience how indigenous weaving practices can be aligned with contemporary design principles. The fabrics, composed of abaca and cotton, reflected the richness of local craft—sturdy yet graceful, traditional yet adaptive.

The students also worked closely with textile researchers to ensure the materials met both sustainability and performance standards, adding a layer of scientific application to creative design.

Representing Mindanaoan Talent on a National Stage

Being the only finalist from Mindanao placed CMU in a special position of representation. Competing alongside established fashion schools from Luzon and Visayas, the CMU team carried both pride and responsibility—to showcase Mindanao’s craftsmanship, discipline, and creativity.

Their success also reflects CMU’s ongoing mission to merge academic rigor with cultural relevance, equipping students to create work rooted in community and informed by science.

A Milestone for Bukidnon’s Creative Community

The recognition of CMU’s “Hulagway sa Tribu” collection signaled more than a competition result—it became a point of pride for Bukidnon’s growing creative movement.

By combining research, design, and cultural awareness, CMU’s students demonstrated how education and artistry can coexist. Each stitch in their collection carried both the discipline of study and the pulse of identity.

For Mindanao, this milestone reaffirmed something long felt but rarely spotlighted:
that creativity from the regions does not play catch-up—it leads with authenticity.
